Search has changed. Has your site kept up?

Traditional SEO optimised for the ten blue links — it assumed visitors would click through to your site. AI search skips that step. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini read your site, synthesise an answer, and present it directly. Your site can rank perfectly in Google and still be invisible in AI-generated answers.

AI crawlers work differently

Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your content lives behind a framework, they may see an empty page.

Citations are earned, not ranked

AI systems cite sources they consider trustworthy and factually clear. E-E-A-T, entity consistency, and structured data are the deciding signals.

Vague facts get fabricated

When your pricing, location, or service area is missing, AI systems guess — and often get it wrong. Being explicit prevents hallucinations.

"Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search."

  • Which prompts triggered a citation and which didn't
  • AI-written interpretation and actionable recommendations
  • Management summary ready to share with your team

Everything that matters for AI visibility

Each category is scored by the weight of its checks. Fix the highest-impact failures first — those move the needle most.

Traditional SEO

HTTPS, title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, canonical URLs. The fundamentals AI systems still rely on to understand a page.

Search Engine Presence

Indexability, robots directives, sitemap, and Core Web Vitals. Checks whether crawlers can actually find and index your pages.

AI Bot Policy

Checks robots.txt for blocks on OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended (Gemini), and Bingbot (Copilot). Blocking any of these directly prevents citations on that platform.

Structured Data

Validates JSON-LD schema against your page type. Structured data is the clearest signal you can give an AI about who you are and what you do.

Content & Answer Extraction

Checks for the patterns AI systems prefer to quote: sufficient length, statistics with sources, FAQ sections, comparison tables, and structured lists.

E-E-A-T & Source-Worthiness

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust. About pages, contact info, author bios, expert quotes — the signals that make a source worth citing.

llms.txt Quality

A /llms.txt file (llmstxt.org standard) gives AI systems a concise, curated summary of your site — a direct line to tell them who you are and which pages matter.

Rights & Licensing

Checks Content-Signal directives in robots.txt — an EU DSM Directive mechanism to explicitly declare whether your content may be used for AI search, input, or training.

Entity Understanding

AI systems model your organisation as an entity, not just a URL. Checks brand name consistency and sameAs links to LinkedIn, Wikidata, and Crunchbase.

Hallucination Resistance

When facts are vague, AI systems guess — and get it wrong. Checks that your service area, pricing model, and key facts are explicit enough to leave no gaps.

Render & Extraction

Most AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript. Checks text-to-HTML ratio, <main> landmark, and boilerplate ratio to ensure content is accessible to a raw HTML parser.

AI Visibility

The only live category. Fires real prompts at Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and more and measures your actual citation rate. Includes competitor comparison and management summary. Costs 1 credit.

Common questions

Yes. Basic structural scans are free — one scan without an account, five with a free registration. AI visibility tests require credits because each test queries live, top-tier AI models (Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and others) on your behalf. Those API calls carry real per-query costs, on top of infrastructure and ongoing development. Credits let us pass that cost on fairly: you pay only for the tests you run, with no subscription. Credits are available in three packs suited to professional and enterprise use: Starter (10 credits), Growth (25 credits), and Pro (60 credits).

AI readiness is how well your website is positioned to be found, understood, and cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Unlike traditional SEO which optimises for ranked links, AI readiness focuses on whether an AI will include your site in a generated answer.

The scanner generates prompts relevant to your site and fires them at live AI models (Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and others). Each response is checked for citations of your domain. Results include your citation rate per model, a per-prompt breakdown, an AI-written interpretation and management summary, optional competitor comparison, and — new — actual search engine ranking data showing where you appear in SearXNG results for the same queries. Each AI visibility test costs 1 credit.

Alongside AI citation testing, LLMZap fires the generated prompts into SearXNG — a privacy-focused meta search engine — and records where your domain appears in the organic results. You see your average position, how many searches you appear in, and which competitors outrank you. This gives you a classical SEO baseline alongside the AI citation data, in a single scan.

When you add competitor domains to a scan, LLMZap places all sites on a Gartner-style quadrant (Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries, Niche Players) and a radar chart. Five dimensions are scored: AI citation rate, content quality, technical readiness, E-E-A-T signals, and structured data. The map shows at a glance where you stand in the AI landscape relative to your competitors — not just in raw scores.

Yes. After any AI visibility scan, credit holders can open the AI chat panel directly on the results page. The assistant has full access to your scan data — category scores, failing checks, search engine rankings, and positioning data — and answers questions in the context of your specific site. Each scan allows up to 5 questions.

llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org) for a plain-text file at /llms.txt that gives AI systems a concise, curated summary of your site. Think of it as a robots.txt for LLMs — a direct line to tell them who you are and which pages matter most.

No. A score of 100 is a goal, not a requirement. Some checks simply don't apply to every site. Use the score as a compass — focus on the highest-weight failing checks, as those produce the most real-world improvement.

Blocking citation bots (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) directly prevents those platforms from citing your site in AI-generated answers. Training bots (GPTBot, anthropic-ai) can safely be blocked if you don't want your content used for model training — that is a separate concern from citation.
A score of 100 is a goal, not a requirement

No real-world site scores 100. Some checks reflect best practices that simply don't apply to every site — a single-page portfolio doesn't need a sitemap, a new product may not have a Wikidata entry yet, and a fresh site can't have a citation rate above 30%.

Use the score as a compass, not a target. Focus on the highest-weight failing checks — those move the needle most. A site that fixes the right five things and jumps from 45 to 70 will see far more real-world AI visibility improvement than one grinding for the final points.
